Top 10 Essential Oils and How to Use Them
OKAY, enough chat. On to the good stuff.
Here’s a list of my top 10 essential oils and how to use them!
1. Lavender. One of my least favorite smelling, but most functional essential oil to have. Yeah, I’m that weirdo that doesn’t like super fragrant floral smells… Oddly enough, I have pretty serious seasonal allergies but I’ve found that by mixing lavender, lemon, and peppermint together with a carrier oil, I can combat those raging allergies. I
2. Ylang-ylang. Easily my favorite oil to have! Ylang ylang is so warm, woodsy, and comforting that I often diffuse it by itself. It’s what I picture a warm hug on a cold winter’s day to feel like. A stress-relieving powerhouse, I also include a couple of drops into my Epsom salt baths for the added benefits. It is NOT pet friendly, so cats and dogs beware. Do not diffuse this around your animals or apply it on them.
3. Vetiver. This oil is really earthy (think damp-woodsy) and has a calm, soothing effect when used. It’s a go-to emotional support oil for days that are extra bonkers (thanks to my small children hah!). In my 200mL diffuser, I’ll use 5 drops of Orange essential oil and 3 drops of Vetiver before I get into bed for a cozy night’s sleep.
4. Lemon. One of my most frequently used oils. Knowing how to use lemon essential oil is a must! It’s a grease and grime buster, great for dingey old towels, and versatile in diffuser blends. I use wool dryer balls for my laundry and love to add a couple of drops to each ball before hitting the start button.
5. Orange. It may seem like a less popular oil, which is a shame because I love its sweet, citrusy aroma in my home. I use it primarily as a grease buster in the kitchen and as a sink scrub as well. For my sink scrub, I use ½ cup of baking soda and a couple of drops of orange essential oil. I’ll shake it in a jar and then sprinkle it into my sink. Get your scrub brush wet and scrub baby, scrub!!
6. Tea Tree. There’s no doubt you have likely heard of this one. Tea tree essential oil is a multi-use oil that is worth having in your kit. It’s known to pack a punch against acne, reduces the itch of eczema and dry scalp—truly all things hair, skin, and nails. I use it as a toner by adding 3 drops of Tea Tree essential oil to 2 oz of witch hazel in a spray bottle. Bye-bye to raging oily skin!
7. Peppermint. There are so many uses for this fresh-smelling essential oil! It absolutely deserves a place in anyone’s top 10 essential oils, no matter what. Peppermint is great for respiratory and emotional support. It’s a great pick-me-up, so take a sniff when that afternoon slump hits to feel reinvigorated. I love using peppermint essential oil in a DIY after-sun spray to relieve soreness. Give this a try!
