A note from Kate
I teach the old-fashioned, from-scratch skills I grew up with, the real, useful version that works in a small kitchen or a patio garden. No magazine-spread pressure. Just come as you are.
I grew up in rural Ontario, where cooking from scratch, putting up jars for winter, and keeping a garden weren't hobbies. They were just how things got done. I didn't think any of it was special. It was just life.
Then I married my high school sweetheart, he joined the Navy, and we moved to San Diego. I started nannying for families here, and somewhere along the way I became "Nanny Kate," the one who showed up, cared for the kids, and happened to also know how to bake bread, put up a batch of jam, and coax tomatoes out of a few pots on a patio.
"I kept hearing the same thing: wait, you know how to do that? Turns out the ordinary skills I grew up with are kind of rare now."
That surprised me. These weren't fancy skills. They were the practical, everyday kind that make a house feel like a home, stretch a grocery budget, and give you something warm to hand a neighbor. So I started sharing them here.
This is my corner of the internet: real food, honest stories, and the kind of hands-on knowledge that works whether you've got acreage or a single sunny windowsill. I share my failures as freely as my wins, because that's how you actually learn. Come as you are. There's always room for one more at the table.
What this place is
A few things I hold to, so you know what you're getting.
This isn't a curated aesthetic. It's a real kitchen and a real garden patch, failures included.
Every skill is taught like I'd teach a friend who has never tried it. Encouraging, never intimidating.
Food is how I care for people. Everything here is meant to be passed along to someone you love.
